The Surrealism of Uyuni

|

Uyuni, Bolivia, is home to the largest salt plains in the world, and quite possibly, the most surreal landscape on earth.

The Salar de Uyuni is estimated to contain 10 billion tons of salt of which less than 25,000 tons is extracted annually.

Travelling through the Salar is not without its risks, as this guide for cyclists explains:

Crossing the Salar is really dangerous and there's no direct track in the salar that goes from Tahua to Uyuni: you need to go through 'La Isla de los Pescadores' (Fisherman's Island, seconds picture above). (...) It's vital to wear sun glasses, there's that story of a swissman that tried to cross it without glasses and ended up blind.
If you are lucky enough to visit the Salar, you could stand in awe at the impossible surrealism of the surroundings, or... you could just goof around with your camera.
Either way it's an awesome place.
