Why do all supermarket apples look the same?

This is something that bugs me about supermarkets. Actually, a lot of things bug me about supermarkets. But this one thing really REALLY bugs me. I don't know if you have ever seen apples being harvested. An apple harvest looks something like this:

So the result is a number of apples, from the same tree and harvest that don't look alike:

They have different colour patterns, right? So why, oh why, do I see this scene every time I go to the bloody supermarket?

Just row after row of identical apples. It just isn't right, is it?

Can anyone shed any light on this?
