The Structural Science of Vortex Rings

|

A vortex ring forms when a very quick burst of fluid shoots out of an opening. As the fluid moves forwards, it spreads out and its front edges curl back. If the speed of the burst is fast enough, the curling fluid eventually curls all the way round, until it is travelling forwards again in the direction of the original burst.

Newfoundlands

|
Unmissable article in the excellent Cabinet Magazine:
How many countries are there in the world? The question is not as simple as it seems. The United Nations claims 191 members, the United States Department of State supposes 192 independent countries, while the C.I.A. World Factbook spreads its net even further by suggesting 268 nations, dependent areas, and other entities. But leaving aside whether territories or colonies such as Puerto Rico or Bermuda should be included (not to mention the political status of such “non-countries” as Palestine, Tibet, and Taiwan) there are a vast number of claims from other, less well-known nations asserting their independent status. Some Comment

I have looked at this sculpture a bazillion times since 1983, and I don't think I ever noticed before yesterday that the line between concrete and steel exactly matches the horizon, when viewed from the paved path by a person of 185 cm height. Coincidence? I hope not. The sculpture, by the way, is called "Time" (Ontario).

Jennifer Angus, the bug killer

|

This is a bit odd. Jennifer Angus uses real insects to create beautiful and intricate patterns inspired by wallpaper and textiles in museum settings. Sure, she gets the insects from reputable insect-specimen dealers, and the installation looks pretty damn good, but still she does kill them.

It's a bit of a dilemma.

The Lad

|

I think everyone in the world knows I’m a little crazy about The London Police’s crazy characters. It was a huge surprise that they are releasing their first designer figure, The Lad, any time now. I think you’ll agree it’s pretty amazing. However, at £60 I may have to give it a miss…maybe the TLP dog bowl is more in my price range at £14!
Pretty cool huh?

Archigram

ARCHIGRAM dominated the architectural avant garde in the 1960s and early 1970s with its playful, pop-inspired visions of a technocratic future after its formation in 1961 by a group of young London architects – Warren Chalk, Peter Cook, Dennis Crompton, David Greene, Ron Herron and Michael Webb.
